Federal Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments

Are you required to make federal quarterly estimated tax payments?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires tax filers to make quarterly estimated tax payments if both of the following rules apply to you:

  • you expect to owe a minimum of $1,000 in federal taxes for 2017 - 2018 tax season - after subtracting federal tax withholding and credits, Plus
  • you expect your federal withholding and credits to be less than the smaller of:
    • 90% of the tax to be shown on your current federal tax return, or
    • 100% of the tax shown on your previous years federal tax return (this only applies if your previous years tax return covered 12 months - otherwise refer to the 90% rule located above only).

To calculate your federal quarterly estimated tax payments, you should estimate your adjusted net income, (gross income minus deductions, and credits) for the calendar year. IRS Form 1040-ES includes an Estimated Tax Worksheet that you can use to calculate your federal estimated tax payments..
